You Know You Live In Rural Iowa When…
You know you live in rural Iowa when…
You would absolutely beg for a Trader Joe’s or a Whole Foods to be closer to you than 2.5 hours away!
Seriously though, this is just because I would like a bigger selection of preferably organic fruits and vegies to choose from. I would like to make kimchi. The recipe requires two heads of Chinese cabbage. I have to give Hy-Vee some credit for the amount and variety of fresh produce available, but they did not have Chinese cabbage. Sigh. And somedays I can find a bag of organic lemons and the next time I go, they have none. Sigh.
What’s a girl to do?
Plan a huge shopping trip to one or both stores, that’s what!
Thanks for reading and have a great day!

I know how you feel; the grocery store in our little town doesn't carry Romaine lettuce! I get most things in the stores in the slightly bigger towns north or south of us; sometimes I get things in the big Cities east or west of us, but it's just not very convenient. I guess we can keep asking and hope for more people to want the same things.
Hi Erica,
My name is Megan, and I'm a project assistant at the Iowa Cancer Consortium. The Consortium would like to better understand why 1 in 4 women did not get screened for breast cancer in the past two years. As a woman in rural Iowa, we would like to hear your thoughts. How easy is it for you to get to a health clinic? Do you feel that your community supports preventive health care? Join the discussion at
